Imperfection is LIFE.

Imperfection is LIFE.

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.”
-Neil Gaiman

In 2018, let us all grow,

by trying new things.

Might look silly.

Might look stupid.

But what I know for sure,

is that you and I will feel exhilarated by life,

because we gave it a shot

instead of just going to work, coming back home,

and doing the same crap routine over and over again.

It’s time to explore what’s beyond the small bubble you live in,

to invest in yourself,

and see if you can be part of something that’s beyond just YOU.

Good luck.

7 Day Face Mask Challenge Part 1

7 Day Face Mask Challenge Part 1

I think this is one of the longest videos I’ve ever done? And oh my goodness, boy did I underestimate how long it would take to edit! Oy vey, haha.

I’ve always been a fan of face masks; they’re great when giving yourself some self-love TLC, hanging out with friends, or needing a quick rejuvenation in the skin. I thought I would compare seven different masks (worn on seven different days) and give you my two cents on all of them. Heads up, most of them are from Asian brands.

Just a little background on my skin, when I was a teenager I had combination skin. My T-Zone was extremely oily and I had lots of fun squeezing zits and pimples back in the day. My cheeks were normal. Now that I’m a wee bit older, my skin has become much more dry all around. This is where the face masks especially comes in handy.

This is part 1, Days 1-4. I’ll be getting out Part 2 (Days 5-7) sometime this month (fingers crossed).

Cheers,
Alice

2018 New Year Resolutions

2018 New Year Resolutions

pexels-photo-285173

HAPPY NEW YEAR, everyone! May the next year bring only more success, light, love, happiness, $$$, and peace into your lives.

We’re officially in 2018. It’s a fresh new start, and I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling lots of hope. 2017 was a great year for me but I’m hoping for 2018 will bring out the best version of ME by further fortifying my strengths and bolstering my weaknesses.

Here are my 2018 new year resolutions. Mind you, it’s a long list. I’ve divided them into different categories:

A   S T R O N G E R   H E A R T   &   M I N D

  • Less Focus On Others, More Focus On Me – It might be due to me growing up in an Asian family where the sense of familial duty (i.e. not bringing shame to your family, constantly being ambitious, looking good if not better than your neighbors, etc.) runs very strong. And it could also be that I’m human, just like everyone else.
I find it difficult to not care what other people think about me. I won’t deny that I’m getting better at it, but I do notice I avoid events, situations, and/or decisions that might make me look ‘silly’ or ‘stupid’. It’s made me miss many amazing opportunities in my life.
This year, I’m hoping to check in by asking myself, “If other people and failures weren’t a factor, would you still want to go ahead with [insert whatever it is I want to pursue]?” If the answer is YES, then I know I need to stop living in my head and create ACTION.
  • Less Thinking. More ACTION – Ties in with the previous point mentioned above. It’s so easy to remain in inertia, constantly planning but never executing. To succeed, you need momentum; to create momentum, you have to force yourself to move. I’m hoping to create more proactive movement in 2018.
  • Less DoomsDay thinking. More HOPE – I admit it: I’m afraid of failure. Though we can learn the most from our failures, let’s face it – it fucking sucks. When it comes to taking a risk in personal relationships or business ventures, I always find myself obsessing over the consequences more than the rewards I could obtain. This year, I’m hoping to focus more on what I can gain.

A   F L O U R I S H I N G   B U S I N E S S

  • 1% More Every Day – Some people I know have AMAZING work habits. They’re like marathon runners: they can work for hours and days at a time to reach their goals. They’re consistent with set morning/night routines and can perform daily tasks like a well oiled machine.
I have decent work habits, but I’m definitely not a marathon runner. And while I would love to have the strong discipline like my marathon workaholic friends, I know the truth: I’m more a sprinter. I can get all the work done I need within a three hour span with intense concentration and gusto but after that, I need a break. Sometimes though, I can get so wrapped up in my work that I forget to take a break. Subsequently, I crash and burn for a couple of days. Kind of like a work binge. It’s not very pleasant.
I’m hoping this year I can adopt a less binge-y work style. Instead of panicking and thinking all of this work has to be done NOW like a hare, I’ll be reaching for 1% more everyday like the tortoise. Slow and steady wins the ultimate life race, right?
  • Youtube – Gaining 500 subscribers on Youtube by December 2018.
  • Creating Content – Creating new content on all social media platforms (WP, FB, Insta, Youtube) every week.

H E A L T H Y   F I N A N C E S

  • Living Within My Means – Pretty self explanatory. Spending LESS than what I make. Not getting caught up by all the glitz and glamour because at the end of day, it’s just things.

N O U R I S H I N G   H E A L T H

  • A Better Diet – Especially when I’m fatigued and stressed from work, I eat very poorly. It’s so easy to eat the sodium-filled instant ramens and sweet chocolates to fuel my energy than to actually cook a decent meal. For 2018, I’ll be adopting a healthier diet by meal prepping during the weekends.
  • Eating Out Less – Eating out can be really expensive, but it can also be very unhealthy. After I finish a meal at a restaurant, my mouth immediately feels parched and dry – they’ve used MSG in their foods. One definite pro of cooking for yourself is that you know what you’re putting into your body.

Okay guys, that’s pretty much it for my 2018 New Year Resolutions. What are your resolutions for this year? Any new changes you want to make? Please share them in the comments down below.

Cheers,
Alice

Key to happiness? Gratitude.

Key to happiness? Gratitude.

Hey guys! For those of you who celebrate Turkey Day – HAPPY BELATED THANKSGIVING! Let’s all take this as a reminder to be thankful 365 days out of the year, not just a couple days. 😉

My life is definitely not perfect, but compared to a couple of years ago, I’m doing a lot better. Back then, I wasn’t straying from the path getting distracted hardcore partying, drinking, etc.; instead, I was on the opposite end of the life spectrum. I was trying way too hard to be perfect with EVERYTHING.

So here I was on this self-destructive journey where I would try to work really hard in short bursts of motivation and energy. Little did I know that life isn’t a race, it’s truly a marathon. After a couple of months I would burn out, crash, and have to reset. It became a repeating pattern. I felt like I couldn’t even stop to smell the roses, look up at the sky, or take a deep breath in; it always felt like I was running against the clock.

I am now trying to break that bad habit by keeping a journal. It has pushed me to slow down in life and give me time to reflect on all the things I do have…instead of always focusing on what I don’t have.

Just three things that I’m grateful for. On bad days, I’m merely grateful that I have the knowledge that ‘this too shall pass’. On good days, I’m grateful for everything – that I’m alive, that I got to see the sun, drive around in my beautiful car, etc.

In addition, because I can have a defeatist attitude at times, I write down three things I accomplished that day. It can be the simplest of tasks, such as: I woke up early today! I washed the dishes. I went grocery shopping instead of eating out. Or it can be big things: I finally turned in that document I’ve been working on for weeks. I paid off all my debt. I forgave someone who really hurt me in my life.

Sometimes there’s no better cheerleader than yourself. It’s so healthy for our souls when we step back and are grateful; it’s also very healthy to give yourself a mental pat on the back.

Do you keep a gratitude journal? How do you battle your own blues in your life? 😉

Cheers,
Alice

Bareminerals BarePRO Foundation Review

Bareminerals BarePRO Foundation Review

For the past couple of years, I’ve been a loyal cushion compact gal. I loved how low maintenance it was to reapply throughout the day and the natural dewy finish was perfect for me.

Lately though, I noticed my needs changed. I wanted more coverage to conceal my sun spots and blemishes. I was getting older and my dark circles became darker. I needed more support to pull off that vibrant, glowing-from-within skin. I also wasn’t a fan of the dewy finish anymore – I craved a matte.

I begrudgingly made a trip to my nearest Ulta Beauty store, bidding farewell to my cushion compacts.

Lo and behold, my new discovery – Bareminerals BarePRO Performance Wear Liquid Foundation. I got the shade in Golden Ivory 08, and I have been LOVING it.

The Bareminerals website claims this foundation will “redefin[e] what long wear means. The skin-loving, high-performance formula blurs pores and imperfections while improving your skin’s condition, all with a soft-focus natural matte finish. With up to 24-hour wear in a range of 30 true-to-you shades, it works and plays as hard as you do. Just one pump delivers lightweight, oil-free, photo-friendly full-coverage.”

I haven’t tested the 24-hour long wear claim because this girl doesn’t have time to allow foundation sit on her face for that long. I did try the foundation (without face primer) for eight hours though, and it definitely lived up to the long wear. My T-zone got a little oily, but with a little pressed powder, it was all good.

I also wanted to test out was the claim that the “formula blurs pores and imperfections…all with a soft-focus natural matte finish.” The watery consistency of the foundation made me hesitant. Was this really going to cover all the blemishes on my face?

After the first application, I did see some blemishes and sun spots peeking through. For daytime, one layer of foundation would suffice to cover my imperfections. For nighttime, however, I did apply another thin layer of foundation to my cheeks, my nose, and the area around my mouth. The coverage is better with a second layer. It’s definitely a buildable foundation. Kudos on that!

I also love how the two layers didn’t leave my skin looking cakey. Another big plus. Instead I was left with a natural yet finish, like I literally woke up with really healthy, glowy skin.

I also bought the Bareminerals Luxe Performance brush and bareSkin PERFECTING VEIL pressed powder as well.

The brush is dense and compact, perfect for a foundation brush. It’s not symmetrical; one side has tapered fibers growing on an angle while the other side has bristles of all equal length. According to the Bareminerals, they claim that “its dense, tapered fibers mimic the shape of your fingertips to provide smooth, flawless coverage, while the compact head size allows for fast and easy blending around hard-to-reach areas like the nose and eyes.” It definitely lives up to that claim and does a wonderful job blending the foundation out. I do find myself using the tapered side more to blend out my foundation.

The pressed powder is great as well, though I think the Ulta makeup artist recommended me a shade too dark. I noticed I have to be more conservative with the amount of finishing powder I use, because if I used too much, the powder would start emphasizing any wrinkles or creases on my face. It’s not my HG finishing powder.

For that reason, I think I’ll be reaching more often for Laura Mercier’s finely milled translucent powder.

And that concludes my review of Bareminerals’ foundation, brush, and pressed powder. Have you guys tried out Bareminerals new line before? If not, what foundations are you loving right now as we go into the chilly, wintery seasons of 2017?

Xoxo,
Alice

Fall Burgundy Makeup Tutorial

Fall Burgundy Makeup Tutorial

Fall is officially upon us! I am so ready for the warm sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes, and fun holidays that are coming up. Know what else? 😉 An extra reason to sport a darker makeup look.

I used mostly the Modern Renaissance palette from Anastasia Beverly Hills. I know the palette has been around for awhile now, but I’ve been so inspired by their red shades.

Here’s my version of that. I wanted to go for a darker red, burgundy makeup look:
